A surprising chill in the air made Lilly wish she’d pulled on her own jacket. Her tee shirt and shorts wouldn’t do much unless she kept moving. “Wait up, Ava,” she called as her feet hit the ground.

The bob of the light ahead stopped, then spun back toward Lilly. “What in the hell are you doing, Lil?”

“If you think I’m letting you go out alone, you’re crazy,” Lilly said as she jogged up. “Now why are you going this way?”

That fast, Ava gave in. Her shoulders even slumped a little, maybe with relief. “Footprints,” Ava explained, and pointed her light at the dirt.

“Looks like Kayla’s shoes. Wasn’t she wearing those ridiculous kitten heels?”

“Yeah,” Ava nodded. “And here are men’s sneakers.”

“All right. Let’s go.”

Aside from their own footsteps, the jungle seemed eerily silent, but Lilly could feel eyes on her from all around. The trees, the brush. Chills made the hair stand up on her arms. “Ava, is this really a good idea?”

“No. But I can’t just sit in that damned van and wait, Lil. What if they’re hurt? I could never forgive myself if someone died just because I was too scared to go look for them.”

A sigh. “Yeah. I getcha.” She hoped nothing else would.

“Look!” Ava waved her flashlight at something ahead. “Look, Lil!” It was hard to read her tone.

As they got closer to the clearing, both stopped. Oh, something had happened here. All the debris normally sort of clinging to the ground had been dug up, like with shoes, in several spots.

“No blood though,” Ava said, reading both their thoughts.

“Kayla!” Lilly called, and took a few steps into the forest, following the obvious drag marks. Nothing. Not a peep. “Noah!”

Ava heaved a sigh. “I . . . don’t know, Lil. Do we follow it, or do we go back?”

“I don’t know, Ava.” Lilly bit her lip. “Maybe follow it for a ways, but it might be . . . it might be . . .”

“Too late,” Ava finished, and looked up with both sadness and fear in her face.

“Yeah.” Lilly took Ava’s hand in hers. “But this isn’t your fault, okay?”

Something cracked. The sound of something breaking, and both spun back toward the van. It was behind them.

“Noah?” Ava called weakly. “Kayla?”

Nothing. Arms found others and tangled themselves. “Where’s your bolo?” Lilly whispered.

“Oh! Oh, yes!” Ava whispered back, and dragged free her arms. From under her jacket, she pulled the eighteen-inch knife. “Adam? Is that you? Levi? Stella?”

Lilly turned and pressed her back to Ava’s. Maybe she wasn’t armed, but she could at least watch their backs. Her heart pounded, and the breeze licked the tears on her cheeks.

Ruffling white fabric lifted in the breeze, far enough away to be nothing she could name. “Ava!” Lilly whispered urgently. “There’s something coming!”

“I know,” Ava said, her voice taut. “There’s one coming from this way, too.”
